Flores is a perfect place for nature lovers who will be enchanted by its captivating scenery; towering active volcanoes, green hills in various shapes with dramatic steep valleys and canyons, crystal clear water on the rivers, white sandy beaches and deserted islands, undulating hilly landscapes with beautiful rice fields interspersed with mountainous areas. You are invited to unveil its unspoiled natural beauties which the region is renowned for. A hidden paradise, Flores Island promises indulgence with its pristine beaches or a leisurely stroll amidst the beautiful rice fields on the slopes of the Iteng and Narang or Roda hilly landscapes. Flores’ isolated waterfalls amidst dense forests – in the mountain valleys are admired for their refreshing beauty such as Cunca Rami and Cunca Wulang in West Manggarai, Ogy waterfal on the outskirt of the town of Bajawa, Ngabatata in Nagekeo or Murusobe, the twin waterfalls in Sikka, East Flores. The natural beauties of Flores promise a great healing experience.

Flores’s distinct rugged landscape with its complex V-shaped valleys and knife edged ridges was formed by an impressive young volcanic mountain range which spans across its backbone. Fourteen of the volcanoes on the island are still active. Lewotobi in Larantuka is the most active now which was erupted on November 2024 and has destroyed the surrounding villages. Others, like the Inerie in Bajawa that shapes of a perfect pyramid and the famous Kelimutu in Ende – are extinct but nonetheless impressive with their crater lakes and calderas such as Ranamese, a crater with still water surrounded with a dense rain forest.

Abound with great mangrove and rain forests; Flores is the home of various tropical flora and fauna. Most of the Manggarai area, from East Manggarai to Labuan Bajo, is still covered by dense forest and holds exoticism. The vast area of Poco Ndeki’s rain forest is home to rare endemic bird species like Loriculus – the Hanging Parrot, or Otus Alfredi, the Flores Scoop Owl; while Mbeliling forest near to Labuanbajo is famous not only because it is the largest forest on Flores but also based on BirdLife International research in this forest there are 29 species of birds. Four types of birds are endemic to Flores and three of them are only found in the Mbeliling forest area. The three types of birds are the Serindit Flores (Loriculus flosculus), the Flores kehicap (Monarcha sacerdotum), and the Flores crow (Corvus Floresis).

The isolated forest of Wae Rebo – one of the most biologically rich habitats in Indonesia; or the outback of Kelimutu National Park which is blessed with rare flora such as pine, mountain fig, red wood, and edelweiss; and the Bamboo forest of Turetogo or around Bajawa are some of the places to cherish the natural diversity.

Exotic plants and orchids, the mimicry of insects, reptiles, and the choruses of birds are nature’s delightful lullabies that keep wildlife lovers always coming back to the lush, unspoiled wilderness of Flores.

It is the people that make Flores a dazzling gem. The uniqueness of Flores lies on its amazing wealth of cultures, languages and history.

One of the remarkable cultural traits is the limitless local languages and dialects spoken by the Florenese who roughly belong to the major ethno-linguistic entities of Manggarai, Ngadha, Nagekeo, Ende and Lio, Sikka and Lamaholot.
