Labuan Bajo: It’s the Gate to Komodo Jurassic Park 

Labuan Bajo – a quiet, beautiful small town located at the western tip of Flores Island which is increasingly famous and sought after by local and foreign tourists. The beaches around Labuan bajo like Waecicu beach is still very clean to be the place for relaxing. Batu Cermin is also a nice place to call at. Goa Rangko with its mesmerizing natural underground pool of crystal clear water with stalagmite and stalactites is one place to explore. You can reach to the cave by local boat.

For natural lover, Mbeliling Forest in the east part of Labuanbajo is one target to explore. Mbeliling Forest is not really far from Labuan Bajo. Mbeliling forest is a habitat for bird species endemic to Flores. In the Mbeliling forest, there are, among other things, typical Flores birds that can make 77 types of sounds. Local residents call it kaka ngkiong.

The Mbeliling Forest Area is an example of how a forest area located at an altitude of more than 1,300 meters above sea level is a paradise for travelers. Mbeliling Forest is only 25 kilometers from Labuan Bajo. This forest area is famous not only because it is the largest forest on Flores but also based on BirdLife International research. In this forest there are 29 species of birds. Four types of birds are endemic to Flores and three of them are only found in the Mbeliling forest area. The three types of birds are the Flores serpent (Loriculus flosculus), the Flores kehicap (Monarcha sacerdotum), and the Flores crow (Corvus Floresiensis).

Since ancient times, the Mbeliling area has been a biological sanctuary with many plant species showing ancient distribution patterns. At the top of the Mbeliling forest there is an enchanting moss forest. The rocks are covered in green moss which amazes the eyes of every visitor. Mbeliling Forest has now become a tourist attraction that is starting to become popular with people who like challenges. Further from Mbeliling, Sano Nggoan Lake is another target to visit.

From Labuanbajo you can also have a visit to the Manggaraian traditional Village at Waerebo. Waerebo is a remote traditional village of the Manggaraian Tribe perched on the mountain, surrounded by mountains and dense tropical forest. The isolated forest of Wae Rebo is one of the most biologically rich habitats in Indonesia.

Waerebo has now grown into a favorite destination for ecotourism. In August 2012, the Waerebo traditional village won the Award of Excellence, the highest award in the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Heritage Conservation 2012 in Bangkok The Waerebo traditional village is often called heaven above the clouds, offering natural beauty and unique cone-shaped traditional house architecture, in the local language called Mbaru Niang.

Save your time for a two days one night to have a trip to this very excited traditional village. You need 2.5 hours drive from Labuanbajo to Dintor, 15 minutes biking up to the trekking start point. Hike up the extreme track of the mountain for about 3 hours walking then be on the ‘Heaven above the sky’, meet and interact with the very friendly Manggaraian tribe.- (Adh)
